Parkside ends year on a high with Sustainable Packaging News Award win

Parkside is celebrating a winning end to 2024 after its Popflex™ innovation took home the Recyclable Packaging Innovation award at the Sustainable Packaging News Awards.

The prestigious end-of-year award was given to Popflex as it offers a novel monopolymer solution to the lidding film recycling challenge. A PET film, Popflex film can be weld-sealed to a matching PET tray, ensuring it stays attached during the recycling process and helping to prevent contamination of the recycling stream. It takes its name from the consumer-friendly easy-opening, which is scored into the film itself using the patented ParkScribe™ laser scoring system.

The complete solution balances recyclability, product protection, and accessibility, making it a worthy winner in a competitive category.

Julia O’Loughlin, Group Marketing Manager at Parkside was delighted with the win, saying, “Using Popflex to help our customers enhance their packaging portfolios is its own reward – but earning recognition from our industry colleagues is a nice bonus!

“We want to thank our talented NPD and production teams for their hard work in bringing the Popflex innovation to market. But most importantly, we want to thank our customers for their commitment to developing innovative packaging that aids consumers with easier recycling. This award win would not have been possible without their creativity and collaborative spirit.”

Popflex is breathable when using the option of macro perforation to prolong the shelf life of certain produce, and it is made using recyclable PET that contains a minimum of 30% post-consumer recycled material, helping customers reduce their plastic packaging tax obligations.

“Retailer guidelines increasingly demand packaging that is easier to recycle, and consumers want to be able to simply drop waste into their bins to make the process as easy as possible,” added Julia. “We’re proud to be playing our part in meeting those needs, and we look forward to continuing to create new and improved innovations throughout 2025.

“Our aim is to start 2025 with the same success that we’ve seen at the end of 2024 and carry it through the year to support our customers.”
